About Pendulum
Pendulum is an immersive language learning company. Language is the instrument of culture. When we learn to speak a new language, we learn to see a bigger world. ****But the way we learn new languages is broken. We don’t learn to speak by memorizing vocabulary, drilling conjugations lists or playing daily games with a green owl. We learn by immersing ourselves in the language—by hearing it, seeing it, and using it as a vessel for connection. Pendulum brings this to life for the first time ever in a digital format by leveraging the latest in conversational voice AI and autonomous LLM agents. We create immersive, personalised and ever-evolving digital worlds for language learning where users step into dynamic narratives and conversational roleplay tailored to their interests, personality, and fluency level. Instead of rote grammar drills or generic dialogues, learners engage in evolving, open-ended scenarios where they actively shape their journey through language.
Role and Qualifications
As Pendulum’s first design engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our product by owning how it looks and feels. You will work with our Founding Designer and the rest of the team to bridge the gap between user’s needs and technological possibilities through intuitive and beautiful interfaces made for entirely new paradigms made possible with AI. You will:
- Design and develop user-friendly interfaces that bring a sense of joy and companionship for our users. You will lead and own our entire design engineering efforts and build from scratch interfaces around our core capabilities, including language-learning conversations supported by voice and visual AI.
- Work with our Founding Designer and the broader team to shape how the product works, looks, and feels. You will collaborate on shaping and implementing new paradigms of human computer interaction in the areas of conversational AI, personalised cultural exploration and beyond.
- Ensure the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of our systems across the frontend stack. You will write clean, maintainable, and efficient code that can scale with the growth of our user base.
What you’ll need
- Minimum 5 years of professional development experience with TypeScript & React to ship user-facing products as a frontend and/or full-stack engineer.
- Expert at Figma (components, variables, prototyping, etc).
- Strong software engineering experience with the ability to pragmatically think through software design and architecture to ship rapidly while scaling to hundreds of thousands of users.
- A passion for building stellar products.
- Curiosity, ambition, kindness, and firm opinions loosely held.
Nice to have
- Experience with building user interfaces that are native to AI, whether professionally or in personal side projects. Some AI-native products we admire are Claude Artifacts, Visual Electric, Granola and NotebookLM.
- You've heard of computing pioneers like Douglas Engelbart, Susan Kare**,** Alan Kay and Ted Nelson, among others, and understand why we’d be big fans of their work.
Our Stack
- Frontend: Typescript and React with Next.js, deployed on Vercel.
